What is Ati Rudra Maha Yajnam?

Amma Sri Karunamayi has blessed humanity with a spiritual offering in 2014, Ati Rudram Maha Yajnam, to be held at the SRIM Center, Forsyth, Near Atlanta from May 1 to 11.

This powerful Maha Yajnam (Supreme Sacrificial Offering) is being performed for the good of all beings in all the worlds and universal peace and prosperity. It is, indeed, our good fortune that such a grand spiritual offering is being performed  in the Divine Presence of Her Holiness Amma Sri Karunamayi, the very embodiment of universal mother whose sublime mission is to “Love, Give, and Serve”.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO COME AND RECEIVE BLESSINGS FROM THE ATI RUDRAM MAHA YAJNAM

MAY 1 - 11, 2014 at the SRIM CENTER, FORSYTH, Near ATLANTA, GA.Ati rudra

PLEASE VISIT www.atirudram.us  FOR UP TO DATE INFORMATION ON THE PLANNING AND PREPARATION FOR THIS GREAT EVENT.

THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO PUBLIC. AS AMMA HAS ALWAYS SUGGESTED, WEARING WHITE CLOTHES ENHANCES THE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE ONE GETS FROM A HOMA.

Sri Rudram hymn is an invocation to Lord Siva.  Sri Rudram consists of two parts, namely, Namakam and Chamakam. Namakam sings the glory of Lord Siva and Chamakam is requesting the Lord to grant the devotee materialistic and spiritual grace so that he/she can elevate himself/herself and serve Lord’s creation in this universe. Each of Namakam and Chamakam consists of 11 chapters called “Anuvakams”.

  • Routine chanting of Sri Rudram is called "Roopam" and consists of chanting the Namakam once followed by chanting the Chamakam once.
  • Eleven recitations of Namakam followed by one recitation of Chamakam are called "Ekadasa Rudram".
  • Eleven rounds of Ekadasa Rudram chanting constitute a "Laghu Rudram".
  • Eleven rounds of Laghu Rudram chanting constitutes a "Maha Rudram", and
  • Eleven rounds of MahaRudram chanting constitute an "Ati Rudram".

If 11 devotees chant Ekadasa Rudram simultaneously that would result in completing a Laghu Rudram. If 121 Ritviks chant Ekadasa Rudram simultaneously that would result in completing a MahaRudram. Typically, a MahaRudram is completed in 1 day resulting in the chanting of the Rudram 1331 (121x11) times.  If a MahaRudram is repeated for 11 days then we would have completed an Ati Rudram during which the Sri Rudram would have been chanted a total of 14,641 (121x121) times.

Introduction

Amma has said that Vedic mantras are in the cosmos and predates ALL religions as we know them today.    Sri Rudram is the center piece of the entire Vedas and represents the “core” of Vedas.  According to Sanatana Dharma, Sri Rudram has the power to attract divine positive energy (which means Siva), for the benefit of the practitioner, his or her household, the world, and the universe at large. Vedic chanting, Sri Rudram in particular, is open to anyone who wants to learn and/or listen to these cosmic sounds.  Amma told us during the temple tour that the cosmic sound which is embodied in the Vedas is the manifestation of God's physical form.  The beauty of Vedic chanting is that you don't have to know the meaning of the words; it is the tone and rhythm that are important and which help guide us from darkness to light.

The Process

Chanting the Sri Rudram is called Rudra Parayanam.  Ati Rudra Maha Yajna consists of performing a fire ceremony (Homa) while chanting the Sri Rudram.  In the Ati Rudra Maha Yajna planned for next May (May 1-11, 2014), we will have 11 Homa Kundas (pits). Each Homa Kunda will have 11 priests or Vedic scholars (called Ritviks) sitting around the Kunda and offering sacred holy items (collectively referred to as Samagri) and Ghee (clarified butter) into the Homa fire.  There will be a head Homa Kunda, where Amma will also be chanting the Sri Rudram and performing the Homa along with the head priest.  Simultaneously and in perfect unison the 121 Ritviks will chant the Sri Rudram and perform the Homa. Each Ritvik will complete an Ekadasa Homa in one sitting lasting about 3 hours. Thus, a MahaRudra Homa would have been completed. When this MahaRudra Homa is repeated for 11 consecutive days, it results in the completion of the AtiRudra Maha Yajnam.

The Purpose

Chanting Sri Rudram purifies the individual at all levels including the body, mind, and the intellect. Purification of the self leads to peace within and unity with the creation and the creator, and ultimately leads to realizing the divinity within ourselves and in the entire creation. The energy emanating from the continuous chanting of Sri Rudram for 11 consecutive days and the healing powers of the holy smoke arising from the Homa Kundas are indescribable. The power of the Rudra mantras removes darkness and brings light into one’s life. The abhishekam milk and the energized holy kalasa waters can help cure sickness and ill-health.

The Event

  • 11 Homa Kundas will be setup for the sacred fire ceremony, along with Amma’s main Homa Kunda.
  • Each Homa Kunda will have 1 Priest and 10 Ritviks who are fluent in chanting Sri Rudram.  Thus there will be 121 Homa kartas combined around the 11 Homa Kundas.
  • Amma will perform the Homa at the main Homa Kunda along with the chief priest.
  • Daily event will start with Rudra abhishekam of SivaLingam by Amma.
  • Abhishekam will be followed by Ekadasa Rudra Homam (sacred fire ceremony) by the 121 Homa kartas.
  • On each of the 11 days, the daily event will start at 8 AM and conclude around 1 PM followed by lunch prasadam.
  • There will be dance and music offering and evening worship including Lalita Sahasranama, bhajans, and satsang.
  • Grand finale will be on the 11th day.  The 11th day festivities will be limited to only the morning program and is expected to conclude by 3 PM. In addition to the Rudra Homa, Chandi Homa will also be performed on the 11th day to balance the energies.

The milk from the abhishekam will be distributed to all the devotees every day.  Water from the holy Indian rivers will be brought in and energized during the Homa and will be made available to the devotees at the conclusion of the 11-day program.

AMMA WILL BE PRESENT FOR THE DURATION OF THE THIS DIVINE EVENT. WHAT A BOON TO BE IN AMMA’S PRESENCE FOR 11 CONSECUTIVE DAYS!

IT IS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF AN ATI RUDRAM MAHA YAJNAM, SO PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND PLAN TO ATTEND THIS UNIQUE EVENT.

What is involved in conducting Ati Rudra Maha Yajnam?

Ati Rudra Maha Yajnam is rarely conducted outside the U.S. due to the logistical challenges associated with an event of this magnitude.  One can count on one's finger tips the number of times Ati Rudra Maha Yajna has been conducted in the U.S. ever...

Ati Rudra Maha Yajna is a monumental task; the cooperation, energy, enthusiasm, and selfless service of all the devotees across the nation are needed to fulfill this wish of Amma of conducting an Ati Rudra Maha Yajna in the US.  To quote Amma, “involve everyone across the nation, go to different cities and spread this news like wildfire, reach out to the organizers across the nation and put this garland (Ati Rudram in the US) around my neck.” Amma also added that even a small seva towards making this Maha Yajna happen will go a very long way in cleansing one’s karma load immensely. All the deities and Lord Shiva will be presiding over this great Rudra Homa all the 11 days and blessing each and everyone who contribute in any shape or form towards facilitating this this great event.

How can devotees get involved?

It is a unique blessing to be part of an Ati Rudram Maha Yajnam. Everyone is welcome! It is even more of a blessing if one is able to actively participate in the organization of the Ati Rudram Maha Yajnam. Amma has stated that even contributing a single firewood log to the yajnam will burn away one's karma load and bring them closer to divinity.

Sponsoring the event at any level and/or contributing towards specific items that are to be used in the Yajnam will bring immense blessings, peace, and good health to the individuals and families of the sponsors and the contributors.

A concerted effort is being made by devotees from now on to talk about Ati Rudram to anyone spiritually inclined at every opportunity, visit other Satsang groups through our brothers and sisters in different cities, and spread the news in their local communities so that we can adorn Amma with a massive garland in 2014.

There are a many logistics to be worked out including assembling 121 Ritviks for all the 11 days of the Homa, getting the SRIM center ground ready for the Yajnam, volunteer workforce for fund raising, sponsorships, procurement of supplies, hospitality, Annadana, serving food, travel, shuttle driving, accommodation, cultural events, religious matters, contacting media etc. It is all humanity's event and all the doors are open for everyone to participate in stitching together this garland for Amma using each and everyone's efficiencies.   Everyone is welcome to share their ideas for making this event a grand success.

Whatever the skillset one may have, there is a role for everyone to perform in the planning and execution of this event. Amma has asked for a list of all those who have volunteered with detailed information including photographs

E-mail Atlanta@Karunamayi.org with any of the following:

  • “I would like to be a Ritvik”: In this case, you have to be able to chant the Sri Rudram without looking at it; please let us know the number of years you have been chanting Sri Rudram and whether you have participated in any public Rudra parayanam events.
  • “I would like to be a volunteer”: In this case, please let us know what area of the event planning and execution you would like to get involved in.  You can list multiple interests or even items we may not have thought of yet.  You can also simply make yourself available as a “free-lance” volunteer, for whichever activity that has a need.

Please check Amma’s 'Facebook' page created for this purpose at: https://www.facebook.com/KarunamayiAmma

We will be posting updates regarding our planning activities for Ati Rudra Maha Yajna to www.atirudram.us.  So please check it often and also share the information with your friends.
